IDEA for Subscription

This mail is not about money, but spped and comfort on getting answers.

I have recently purchased myeclipse. btw, that was the tool where I hread about icefaces for the first time.

yearly subscription for myeclipse is cheap, in return I have some technical support, not perfect, but fast enough for me and does cover the problem sufficiently.

HOW ABOUT ICEFACES taking over this idea/aproach, for some small price to answer e.g. 10 questions / month. For others without subscription, nothing changes, they would be answered as they are sereved now.

This technology is much harder then just configuring IDE tools, and this idea makes sence. At the other side, icefaces could gain a group or aware users who are willing to invest a bit into learning and benefit might be mutual, regarding collecting bugs, etc....

I am writing this as I am courious on responses mostly of readers, not neceserilly icefaces team. So feel to reply wit 1=stuipd... 5=genial idea.

This way certain group of people who pay for subscription can get answers faster for period they pay (e.g. end of project :)

Thanks.

IDEA for Subscription

Petar,

First of all thank you for the question. It certainly isn't a stupid one! If you have been on the ICEfaces forums for any length of time you are probably aware that our employees are typically very active in trying to help out. Even at that however there are frequently many more queries than we can deal with in a reasonable amount of time.

We have considered and explored several models to improve our forum support including offerings similar to those of Genuitec/MyEclipse, which as you correctly pointed out seems to work very well for IDE styled technologies and very large communities. Unfortunately we haven't been able to convince ourselves that these models translate well to alternative technologies such as ICEfaces.

One of the things we have settled on that does seem to be effective is in how we triage our forum responses. Typically any commercially supported customer will receive a priority response, either by email or by a public forum posting. (We do need to pay to keep the lights on and the computers running and this is how we do it). After that we try to respond to users who are new to the ICEfaces community and to those questions that address broader technology issues that would be of a concern to the community as a whole. Questions specific to a particular user configuration or application, or involve integration with commercially available third party technologies are often very time consuming and receive a lower priority, as they are often user specific in nature. We believe these types of questions are best dealt with through our various commercial support offerings.

We recognize that not everybody in our community can afford or necessarily needs commercial support. As an alternative we also make it a point to prioritize helping those community members that help others. If we see a user being regularly active on the forum assisting other users, we will go out of our way to assist that individual if and when they ever have a question, regardless of its nature (basically we try to prioritize they as if they were a commercially supported customer). The take away message here is "if you help others we will assist you". Our hope is that by doing this we can provide incentives and motivations that will increase community participation in the forums. Something that we all benefit from!

Hopefully this helps. Best of luck and thanks for tying ICEfaces!

You mentioned someting interestinghere. It's often not issue about being able to afford - it's about influencing management to pay for it.... - which is so difficult that one can't believe.... ...

Anyway, I am glad I found win-win combination with myeclipse-icefaces, keep up a good work and see you around...

BTW, your support in community is much faster then most of others and deryk.s does great effort... Don't get me wrong, I was not complaining.... just was courious...
